Sustainable Industrial Transitions: Building global partnerships for inclusive green competitiveness

Hosted by the Embassy of India to Belgium, Luxembourg and the EU & Sweden’s Permanent Representation to the EU

Industrial decarbonization and a just green transition are fundamental for reaching the goals of the Paris Agreement and mitigate emissions substantially. Each region and country has unique challenges and opportunities but all are interdependent. The strength of global, regional, national and local partnerships between countries and the industry sector may determine how successful  and how fast the transition will be.

The European Commission’s Clean Industrial Deal announced in February 2025 outlines the EU strategy to foster a competitive and sustainable industrial landscape. This renewed effort by the EU comes in the context of world-wide efforts in major economies, including India, Brazil and South Africa, to move the global industry transition forward. This year may also bring further opportunities to build global momentum towards industry transition through revised National Determined Contributions and forums such as COP30 and G20. Industrial policies will play a central role and how well they interact globally and the strength of cooperation for example on technology, innovation, trade and investments will be key.

This roundtable event will explore issues such as international trade and competitiveness, innovative financing mechanisms to support sustainable industrial transitions and opportunities for global partnerships that promote equitable and sustainable industrial transitions worldwide. Through speakers and new research on green industrial policy, it will build on insights from our 2024 event in Brussels.

Objectives

  • Provide a platform for dialogue on the global implications of the EU’s Clean Industrial Deal, bringing together government representatives from emerging and developing countries, European policy makers, industry leaders, and experts
  • Drawing on lessons from current green industrial policy approaches, identify strategies and mechanisms that are inclusive and supportive of sustainable industrial transitions worldwide.
  • Strengthen international cooperation and complementary initiatives that promote equitable and effective decarbonization efforts.
  • Develop actionable policy recommendations for participants to bring back to their respective organizations and governments.
